How to renew a domain and keep track of its expiry date

Organise dates, contacts and payments to keep your address working.

Registration lasts for a defined period

A domain needs renewal to stay registered. Its expiry date is independent of hosting, email and HTTPS certificates. Keep an inventory of names, registrars, registrants, expiry dates and responsible people. Review it when your team changes or a project is sold.

Use a contact email you can recover

Keep registrant details current and use an email account you can access. Avoid depending on one person or a former employee’s account. Regularly check that provider notices arrive and do not get caught in spam.

Understand automatic renewal

Automatic renewal reduces work but depends on correct settings and sufficient funds or a valid payment method. Check whether it is enabled for each domain and when payment is attempted. Confirm completion by checking the new expiry date.

Review pricing and the renewal period

Compare standard renewal prices, taxes and duration. Do not confuse a registration discount with later-year pricing. For a portfolio, estimate the annual budget and remove a domain only after reviewing its use and deciding to let it expire.

Act early if it has already expired

If your website or email stops working, check domain status before editing DNS. Post-expiry renewal, redemption and deletion periods vary by extension and may involve extra charges. Contact your provider promptly; do not assume a grace period or that every domain can be recovered.
